Mandatory Refresher Training
Aligned to Skills for Health and Following Resuscitation Council Guidelines


The course is aimed at nurses, HCA's and carers that need to do their yearly update. anyone attending this course is required to have attended a full mandatory training course in the past. 


The candidates are given a booklet or handout for further reading. The course is aligned with the Core Skills Training Framework. The course also has an element of practical: Moving and Handling and the CPR for both adult and paediatric.

Basic Nursing Skills for HCA's: Part 1


The course is aimed at HCA that are looking to work within a hospital environment or an environment where they need the skills such as blood glucose testing. No past experience needed but a willingness to learn. There is an element of practise and simulation allowing the candidate to develop those skills.

The course covers the following:
 General observations
Blood pressure
 Temperature
 Saturation levels
 Heart rate
 Blood glucose test using a glucometer - the candidate will be able to take their own blood glucose test.
 Urinalysis
 Documentation using NEWS 2 (National early warning signs)

Basic Nursing Skills for HCA's Part 2 No longer offered


Basic Nursing Skills for HCAs (2) is a comprehensive training program designed to equip Healthcare Assistants (HCAs) with essential skills required in the healthcare sector. The course focuses on various aspects including patient hygiene maintenance, fluid and nutrition intake monitoring, mental health awareness, learning disabilities, dementia, understanding vulnerable individuals, and manual handling techniques, with practical sessions included.


This course is tailored for HCAs working within the healthcare sector or individuals interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. It is delivered by experienced nurses who are actively engaged in the healthcare field. Participants will receive instruction through a combination of theoretical learning and practical demonstrations to ensure effective skill acquisition.

Key Learning Objectives


 Understand principles and practices of maintaining patient hygiene.
 Monitor and manage fluid and nutrition intake effectively.

Venepuncture & Cannulation (CPD Standards Accredited)


This course is aimed at nurses and HCA’s who need a refresher or who are doing this for the first time. 

The course gives the candidate the skills they need to be able to carry out venepuncture or cannulation in their place of work. The candidates will have the opportunity to try out their new learnt skills on mannikins. 

At the end of the course each candidate is given a take-away booklet for them to have their skills signed off. This course is CPD standard accredited.

Medication Safety and Buccal Training (CPD Standards Accredited)


This course is aimed at nurses, HCA's or anyone that really looks after an individual who is taking medication and needs to understand the importance of giving medication safely. 

Preferably the candidate will have a background knowledge, be it minimal, but support will be given to those who have no knowledge at all. This course is also CPD Standards accredited.

Catheterization: Male & Female


This course is aimed at professionals such as nurses, doctors and carers working in a healthcare setting. The course will provide candidate with the knowledge and understanding to perform the catheterization procedure on male or female patients, it covers both theoretical and practical elements.

Catheter care training will usually cover the different types of urinary catheters, risks of infection, anatomy, procedures and record keeping. 
We also have manikins that can be used to practice on – both male and female.

Gastrostomy- PEG


This course is aimed at nurses HCA's and carers or anyone that cares for a person with a PEG. The course gives the candidate a better understanding of what a PEG is and how to care for it, it also looks at the complications of having a PEG. 

Nutrition is also featured in the course, including Total Parental Nutrition (TPN). Basic knowledge is required, however support will be given to those who have little knowledge. This course is CPD standard accredited.

Adult Tracheostomy Care & Management


This course is aimed at nurses and HCA’s that are looking after those that have a tracheostomy. 


The course can be used as a refresher course a but is applicable to a candidate that has never cared for a client with a tracheostomy. Basic knowledge is required, however the trainer will support the candidate if they have never cared for a client with a tracheostomy. 


This course is CPD standard accredited and is designed to familiarise each candidate with the reasons for tracheostomy and the care and management of a tracheostomy. The course aims to ensure that the candidate has sufficient knowledge to work with an individual with a tracheostomy safely and effectively.

This course is for healthcare staff who tend to people using these devices when living with breathing difficulties or disorders.
The course delivers an overview of each of these air delivery systems, the reasons for their use, their benefits and possible side effects. We currently use the NIPPY 3 to refer to.

Tissue Viability, Wound Management & Care


The course is aimed at nurses and health care assistants involved in caring for patients with chronic and acute wounds. The candidate will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of national policies and guidance in relation to wound care. The following will be covered:

Basic Diabetes Management


This course is aimed at nurses (paediatric nurses) HCAs and carers who look after clients that have diabetes the candidate, Or they just want to increase their knowledge within this subject. The candidate does need to have some knowledge however, if lacking, they will be supported by the trainer . 

The course has a general look at the disease process and what areas it affects within the body. This course is CPD Standard accredited.

Epilepsy Awareness & Buccal Training 


The aim of this course is to provide the candidate with the required knowledge and understanding of epilepsy along with the key information about administration of emergency medicines such as Buccal Midazolam. Allowing them to provide the essential care and support for individuals with epilepsy. The course is aimed at nurses, HCAs and carers.

Stoma Care


This course is aimed at nurses, healthcare assistants and care workers that are responsible for delivering stoma care to their clients. The Candidates will gain an understanding of the digestive system, different types of stoma, diet and the implications and side effects that a stoma can cause.

The Candidate will gain both theoretical and practical knowledge, so they feel comfortable and competent working around a stoma.

The course will also cover the correct technique and methods of changing a stoma bag, as well as giving examples of the different types of stoma bags.
We will also teach the importance of maintaining effective infection control and the underpinning of privacy, dignity and respect for the client.

3. Basic Nursing Skills 4 HCAs (2): This course delves into maintaining hygiene for patients, monitoring fluid and nutrition intake, increasing awareness of mental health, learning disabilities, dementia, understanding vulnerable individuals, and manual handling, including practical sessions.

The resources we provide to candidates, such as booklets, are sourced from the Care Certificate Workbook available on the Skills Platform. Candidates are required to complete questions either during the sessions or as homework.


Here's how the program works: Within a span of 6 months, all the required standards must be successfully completed. Upon meeting these requirements, the Care Certificate will be automatically awarded. It's worth noting that the "Basic Nursing Skills 4 HCAs" course goes beyond the Care Certificate requirements to equip candidates with additional knowledge and skills for improved client care.

PMVA refresher (1 day)

Spinal Injury & Bowel Management
